When was the last time you watched yourself getting so angry that you lost control? Or, worried endlessly about how the interview would turn out? How about the time you went delirious with joy? Or did something outrageously crazy for love?

Riding the emotional roller coaster is a familiar activity for most of us. Emotional wellness is about being in touch with your emotions and acknowledging them. By doing so, we can change the way we feel.

Emotions affect our life, hugely. It affects our breathing, our digestion and therefore our skin and hair as well. As a beauty professional, I have seen emotional condition reflects on your skin.

Dark circles, shallow complexion, blemishes, acne, excessive dryness, hairfall, dandruff are all reflections of your emotional wellness.

In this blog let’s discuss some common emotional states we experience like worry and anger.

Let’s take a simple example. For example, you worry a lot. Have you observed that when you get worried, your muscles get tensed? And that includes your stomach muscles. And this results in you not being able to digest your food. I have suffered this for years. For me, it’s more about anxiety. If I am going out to give a session, meet unknown people, do something that I do not want to – I end up feeling anxious and guess what it takes a toll on? You’re right – it’s my stomach.

I have suffered from a nervous stomach for years. It was only recently that I have identified my issue. I breathe deeply, acknowledge my reluctance, and figure out how I can meet the commitment – I take positive action instead of just letting my anxiety rule me.

So, the next time you find your stomach muscles tense and find yourself worrying, try this simple exercise. Ask yourself some questions.

What am I worried about? Write down a list of things that are worrying you. Now read the list and circle the one which is bothering you the most. Now write down your primary worry on another sheet. You can forget the rest. Most of the other worries stem from this one. Now ask yourself some relevant questions.

Has it happened yet?
If yes, how can you tackle that problem instead of worrying. Write down some positive actions that you can take and implement them.

If no, what are the chances are that it will happen? Worry is always about the future – maybe even as close as the next moment or as distant as when your children grow up. It is something that you think will happen.

The best way to deal with worry is to live in the present moment.

Deal with this moment, every moment. One way I have dealt with this is by using essential oils. When I find myself worried, I use a lot of citrus fresh oil. Take lemon or orange, grapefruit or mandarin essential oil. Use it in your bath water. Put a few drops in a tissue and smell it. Put it in a diffuser. I personally love orange essential oil – it peps me up.

Anger is another emotion which consumes most people. Again repeat the exercise we did above.

Write down the one primary thing that makes you angry. Does it involve another person? Is it a pattern that repeats itself? I have observed that people who get angry are highly stressed. And when you don’t express anger, it upsets the stomach and liver and often leads to combination skin.

Neroli or orange blossom is a good oil to use because it helps to reduce anxiety and stress. Lavender is also a great oil to use.
